Seacat Optometry is pleased to announce we will soon be offering treatment options for patients suffering from dry eye disease. Studies show that close to 90% of dry eye symptoms can be related to a condition call Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD. The meibomian glands are located in the upper and lower eyelids and are responsible for providing the outer oily layer to a healthy tear film. When the meibomian glands become clogged and the oily layer is compromised, the watery layer of the tears is left unprotected and can evaporate easily leading to dry eye symptoms. A good analogy is to think of the outer, oily layer of the tear film as the roof of a house. If the roof of the house is damaged then everything below is exposed to damage.
Seacat Optometry utilizes the latest technological advances to determine if the meibomian glands are healthy and can show patients pictures of their actual glands for a better understanding. Then, if it is determined that the glands are unhealthy and clogged we can provide treatment to help open up those glands. The LipiFlow system can remove gland blockage and restore the function of the meibomian glands. The LipiFlow treatment is administered with no pain and minimal discomfort in our office. The effects of LipiFlow depend on the health of your gland structure and the extent of your MGD so results may vary with each patient. Some patients notice results within weeks while others may not notice improvement for up to 90 days as the glands naturally begin to generate and expel the necessary oil levels to protect the tear film.
